Compensation: $63,450-$105,000/year, depending on years of experience, licensure type and degree type

Job Summary:
The Music Teacher is a year-round professional role reporting to the Education Coordinators. This position involves providing instructional leadership in a specialty area aligned with IEP goals and diploma requirements. The Teacher collaborates with classroom and clinical staff to deliver individualized, evidence-based educational programs tailored to each student's interests, strengths, and needs. Responsibilities include overseeing Educational Assistants and Assistant Teachers, offering training and mentoring in instructional practices. The music teacher works closely with staff across Educational, Clinical, and Campus Life departments to create an enriched educational experience focused on academic progress, daily life skills, and vocational development through hands-on, student-driven activities. Additional responsibilities include contributing to programs, events, and services, while maintaining confidentiality and exercising discretion regarding sensitive information about Shrub Oak and its students.

Position Type & Expected Hours of Work
  • Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Conducts assessments, interprets results, and makes recommendations to inform instruction
  • Leads the development of curriculum and adapts/modifies the curriculum, instruction and assessment to meet the individualized strengths and needs of each student
  • Collaborates with faculty and clinicians as needed, to support students in all areas of campus life
  • Designs task-analysis and integrates evidence-based instructional practices with attention to sensory needs
  • Primarily responsible for the selection of appropriate instructional materials and equipment and identifies alternatives, as appropriate
  • Models effective instructional best practices for the specialty area that closely align with the mission, vision, goals, strategic plan and learning outcomes
  • Promotes the student's development of appropriate communication, behavior and social interaction
  • Oversees and manages others in providing high quality, individualized, appropriate instruction
  • Assists students with self-care needs, and assists with behavior management, as needed
  • Ensures safety procedures are followed
  • Participates in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process and Intervention Process for students

Requirements:
Experience & Education:
  • A Master's degree in Music Teaching or a closely related degree required
  • NYS Special Education Teacher Certificate required; will consider certifications in progress
  • Experience with technology applications as they relate to instructional resources and strategies required
  • Knowledge of best practices in the specialty area and in special education required
  • Experience working with students with Autism and related disorders preferred
  • Knowledge of federal law (IDEA), state law, and national standards related to special education preferred

Skills & Abilities:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills required
  • Skilled in crisis intervention and managing crises/behaviors in the classroom/educational setting 
  • Ability to use Shrub Oak’s technology system(s); skilled using Microsoft 365 applications
  • Ability to adapt, remain flexible and make appropriate decisions under pressure and evolving circumstances
  • Ability to get TCIS trained and remain current on all trainings required

Physical Requirements/Demands:
A workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; work regularly requires sustained concentration. Standing for sustained periods of time, bending, stretching, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors), around a hilly campus as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice. May need to lift/move boxes up to 25 pounds and move/rearrange furniture.

Work Environment:
We are a boarding school located on a 127-acre campus. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces, mostly inside the classroom or educational environment. May include work within the residential setting. The building has 6 floors accessible by staircases and elevators.
