What are we looking for?

The Education “Floater” is a year-round, non-live-in position. In collaboration with the Education Operations Manager, the “Floater” provides coverage for DSPs on short-term leave and support for groups of students in classes. The “Floater” will also take part in new staff orientation with DSPs. As part of the school team the “Floater” will work closely with colleagues to create and motivate an inclusive community of learners and foster skill development to meet the diverse needs of our student population. Having access to confidential information regarding Shrub Oak and its students, discretion and independent judgement is required. The “Floater” also actively assists with other programs, events, and services administered through Campus Life or Education, and have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of responsibilities. 

Essential Functions – Primary duties of the position

  • Provide coverage for DSPs when needed 

  • Push into classes to provide support when not in coverage 

  • Models' effective crisis management for staff 

  • Supports student progress toward independence 

  • Monitors and assists students during educational and recreational activities 

  • Monitors and assists students in meeting ITEP goals and objectives 

  • Completes appropriate amount of work in an efficient manner; seeks out additional assignments as time permits 

  • Maintains confidentiality of student information 

  • Participates in professional development meetings as needed and required 

  • Participates in crisis intervention as needed and appropriate, and proactively works with students in crisis to de-escalate situation as needed 

  • Attends to and reports all emergencies and/or other situations requiring immediate attention in a timely manner to the appropriate staff member(s) in accordance with Shrub Oak policies/procedures 

  • Works effectively in a team environment 

  • Attends staff meetings as directed and/or scheduled 

  • Ensures safety procedures are followed 

  • Participate in new staff orientation (DSPs) 

  • Prioritize work assignments appropriately 

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Skills

Education and Experience 

  • Experience working with special needs populations as a DSP or related position 

  • Experience working with adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum as well as students with other complex disabilities including students with challenging behaviors 

  • 5-year minimum experience of relevant professional experience required, including experience working in a school, particularly a residential school 

  • Experience in community-based programs 

  • Certified in TCIS 

  • Experience working in a transdisciplinary program

What is the nature and scope of independent decisions made in this position? 

He/she must be able to make reasonable assessments and decision, to handle the day-to-day aspects of the role; he/she will be required to make valued, informed assessments and recommendations, and consult for guidance as appropriate 

Work Environment 

The work is performed in a residential, campus school environment. 

Physical Demands 

Physical demands are in excess of sitting and require walking or standing to a significant degree. The Educational Floater is required to move throughout the campus on a routine basis and executive program operations. The ability to navigate stairs, mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement, bending and squatting, lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds, and the ability to rearrange furniture for events is occasionally required. Ability to move quickly and freely around the campus, and on a moment’s notice, to ensure the safety of our students in unexpected or challenging situations.     

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work 

This is a 12-month position. Full-time staff work a traditional 40-hour work week on the DSP schedule, with expected participation in extracurricular activities.   

Salary range: $30/hr

Travel – N/A
