Essential Functions
Reporting to the Director of Education, the Assistant Director of Education will own the coordination and management of the day-to-day operations of the SOIS education program under the guidance of the Director, cultivating a safe and positive climate for students and teaching and support staff. Shrub Oak International School is a 12-month program and requires that the Assistant Director be accessible by phone or email 24/7/365.  This is a designated growth position, looking to mentor and prepare the Assistant Director to transition to Director of Education.  
  • General end-to-end oversight of Education Staff including hiring, scheduling, daily assignment coordination, performance management and compliance.  
  • Develop and implement a robust department onboarding/training, upskilling and mentoring program. 
  • Provide real-time updates to the Director on all department, student and/or staff concerns and issues. 
  • Ensure Incident Reports are timely, well written and accurate. 
  • Share responsibilities for testifying on behalf of students. 
  • Oversee IEP/ITEP process from planning through student performance through a consistent hands-on approach and regular meetings with teachers. 
  • Collaborate with Residential life to ensure one student and one plan. 
  • Collaborate with clinical and campus life staff to coordinate service delivery, reinforcing IEP objectives, and ensuring all Education assessments and behavior management plans and updates are accurate and timely. 
  • Assist the Director of Education in budget preparation and monitoring compliance with State, Federal and local Policies and Regulations.  
  • Meet and/or communicate with parents, under direction of Director of Education. 
  • With administrative support, maintain accurate database and files of current and former students including transcripts where appropriate. 
  • Work with the Director of Education to advise on design, furnishings, and equipment for classrooms and facilities. 
  • In the absence of the Director will act on their behalf and ensure the Director is updated on occurrences. 
  • Perform related work and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements:
Experience & Education:
  • Master’s Degree in Special Education is required, advanced degree is preferred. 
  • Current New York State teacher certification for special education is preferred. Current NYS teacher certification in a related field and New York School Building Leadership (SBL) certificate is required. 
  • Experience as a teacher and administrator working with students with autism and related disabilities is required, including a minimum of 5 years’ direct development of IEPs and implementation through service delivery. 6-7years’ experience is preferred. 
  • 5+ years directly managing, training, scheduling, counseling and mentoring staff is required, including all administrative tasks associated with supervision. 
  • Direct experience as a senior leader in an educational setting such as a Dean/Vice-Principal/Principal or related title. 
  • Launch and/or change management experience with direct experience leading implementation with a hands-on approach. Ability to write and train policies and procedures. Must be comfortable with an in transition and growing organization model with non-traditional approaches to teaching and learning. 
  • Must demonstrate skill in curriculum development and instructional strategies and assessment procedures across content areas. 
  • Experience with Connors cases and other forms of litigation is preferred. 
Skills & Abilities:
  • Superior communication skills (both oral and written) with an ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, all levels of staff and external consistencies. Ability to create and deliver presentations  
  • Skilled in managing challenging behaviors and executing de-escalation techniques
  • Ability to work in a supportive, collaborative role with staff 
  • Ability to interface with other departments to coordinate reciprocal services for achieving special education goals 
  • Ability to handle confidential information discreetly and professionally 
  • Ability to collaboratively work with other areas of the school to fully support individualized student development, and with administrative functions to support SOIS policies, growth and development 
  • Ability to mentor and develop staff individually and collectively 
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a fast-paced, unpredictable environment
  • Ability to handle highly challenging behaviors, including those aggressive in nature
  • Ability to get TCIS trained and complete/maintain all required trainings

Physical Requirements/Demands:
A workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; work regularly requires sustained concentration. Standing for sustained periods of time, bending, stretching, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors), around a hilly campus as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice. May need to lift/move boxes up to 25 pounds and move or rearrange furniture.

Work Environment:
We are a boarding school located on a 127-acre campus. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces, mostly inside the classroom or educational environment. May include work within the residential setting. The building has 6 floors accessible by staircases and elevators.
